RESULTS!

OK, that’s what therapy’s all about!  But is our definition of results in line with our clients definition? Could we enumerate progress easier?

It was back in 400 BC when early physicians such as Hippocrates and Galen began advocating manual therapy techniques, massage, and hydrotherapy for treatment of musculoskeletal conditions.  The earliest documented origins of actual physiotherapy as a specialism date back to Per Henrik Ling who founded the Royal Central Institute of Gymnastics for massage, manipulation, and exercise. In 1887, PTs were given official registration by Sweden’s National Board of Health and Welfare. Other countries soon followed. In 1894 four nurses in Great Britain formed the Chartered Society in 1813 of Physiotherapy (CSP)

While patients often present with pain, this is often not the only motivation for seeking treatment.  Range of Motion (PROM and AROM), balance, flexation & rehabilitation are just some of their additional needs. Using proven assessment techniques, professional therapists able to uncover the patient’s real needs and work with them to build a ‘wellness Objective’.

As medical technology has progressed, so too has patients’ interest in their own healthcare.  While pain can be measured using accepted indexes such as the VAS score, how can strength, range-of motion and balance be easily demonstrated to the patient?  Several leading medical manufacturers have been working hard on the development of sensor systems for the measurement of patient data.  Ranging in price from several hundred to thousands of £, these systems come with different levels of portability and ease of use. Montpellier-based Kinvent has focused on presenting these patient data in a way that draws out the patients’ interest in the numbers, clearly providing them with a downloadable report for reviewing with their therapist, trainer and family.

By demonstrating progress, patients are motivated to go beyond symptoms and achieve their own personal Wellness Objectives. Read the Abstract for KFORCE Bubble HERE
